My Professional Journey
Hello — I’m Brian Lory. My career reflects a breadth of experience across business, life sciences, and education, unified by a consistent theme: working with complex information and making it accurate, understandable, and actionable for different audiences.
.
Early in my career, I developed strong communication and presentation skills through broadcasting studies at Ball State, which laid the foundation for explaining ideas clearly and confidently in both live and virtual settings. I later joined Charles Schwab, entering the financial services industry without a formal business background and quickly adapting to a highly regulated, performance‑driven environment. There, I worked in outbound sales and retirement services, supporting clients by translating complex IRS regulations and financial concepts into clear guidance for small business owners and retirees.

I later moved to a small financial advisory firm, where I focused on financial and investment research while also supporting client education efforts. In this role, I regularly synthesized technical information and presented it to non‑expert audiences, reinforcing my ability to bridge subject‑matter expertise with practical application.

In 2009, I returned to academia to complete an M.S. in Biology at IUPUI. My graduate coursework spanned molecular biology, cancer biology, physiology, embryology, and plant molecular biology, strengthening my scientific foundation. Alongside my studies, I served as a recitation leader for undergraduate biology, supporting curriculum delivery and reinforcing core scientific concepts through applied instruction.

Following graduate school, I worked as a science instructor in a medical education setting, teaching courses such as biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology. In addition to classroom instruction, I was responsible for curriculum development and delivery in both in‑person and hybrid formats. This experience strengthened my ability to work with adult and non‑traditional learners, many of whom brought extensive professional experience and required practical, outcome‑focused instruction.

I later transitioned back into laboratory‑based work through a contract role at Corteva Agriscience. There, I supported plant pathology and seed treatment research, working with fungal and nematode pathogens affecting major crops. I operated independently in a lab environment, collaborated with off‑site teams, and partnered with discovery chemistry colleagues to evaluate experimental treatments. My responsibilities included experimental execution, data analysis, organism culture, and presenting research findings.

After the onset of COVID‑19, I joined Orchard Software as a Training Specialist supporting laboratory information systems (LIS). Despite no prior LIS experience, I quickly ramped up to deliver virtual training for customers and internal teams, while also contributing to the development of eLearning and documentation. This role combined my scientific background, technical learning ability, and communication skills in a highly regulated healthcare technology environment. Following an acquisition and product phase‑out, my position was eliminated as part of a broader reorganization.

Across these roles, I’ve consistently worked at the intersection of technical knowledge, communication, and operational support. While parts of my background include formal teaching and training, my broader strengths lie in adapting quickly to new domains, collaborating with subject‑matter experts, and ensuring complex information is communicated clearly and accurately to support organizational goals.
Beyond Work
Outside of work, I’m a father of four, which means much of my time is spent supporting my kids’ activities and sports. It’s a role that has reinforced the importance of patience, organization, and perspective.

I enjoy traveling whenever possible and value experiences that broaden my understanding and expose me to new environments and cultures. I’ve been fortunate to travel internationally to places such as the Peruvian Amazon, South Africa, and several destinations across Europe and Central America.
Closer to home, I’m a regular at the Indy 500, follow the Colts and Pacers, and enjoy activities like trivia nights that combine curiosity and problem‑solving. These interests reflect the same traits I bring to my professional work: engagement, adaptability, and a genuine enjoyment of learning.
